New Knife - CRKT Pilar IV

The big question is, will the success continue? If first impressions are to be believed, it is. What I am talking about is the "saga" that is CRKT Pilar. They weren't the first to try to squeeze the most out of a specific model by letting it go through some kind of "knife mitosis", but they've done it very well.

It started with a boat. Or rather a knife named after Hemingway's fishing boat signed by the Danish virtuoso Jesper Voxnaes. In the beginning, a fairly small knife made entirely out of steel with a frame lock and a thumb hole in the blade. The steel was CRKT's normal, 8Cr13MoV. Knife buyers in general and lovers of Voxnaes in particular appreciated the little rascal but wanted more. More like in bigger! And yes, preferably with a different steel in the blade.

From that desire, Pilar II was born. It was bigger, still an all knife steel with the same frame lock and simple blade steel. However, the opening hole in the blade had been supplemented with a flipper. The format meant that it was called "Pilarge" even though the blade length was only increased by about 7 mm. A little later, by popular demand, a version with a presentation side in G10 and with a D2 blade was added. What is exclusive with CRKT is standard with most other brands can be stated.

It was followed by Pilar III. The G10 side had now been made permanent as had the larger format. Or rather, the blade had increased further in length from 6.7 to 7.5 cm. In addition, the blade had also become pointier. Somewhat confusingly, it is available in two versions with blades in 8Cr-steel orD2.

Now we are writing 2023 and it is time for Pilar IV. It is the same concept with some improvements. The blade shape has been changed to a clip point, which is debatable as to whether it is an improvement or not as it is a matter of taste. I consider it a step up as I generally appreciate a pointier tip on my EDC knives. The knife has also become slightly more prominent. The blade has now stretched from just over 7.5 cm to a stately 7.85 cm, which gives a total length of 18.6 cm. Then the steel is D2 and nothing else, and to mark that it is a later generation, it has been allowed to keep its backspacer in brass.

Another detail that came already on the previous version was the ball bearings that make this knife extremely easy to open. Overall, this all adds up to an interesting knife that I intend to review as soon as possible.
