And suddenly the brand QSP exploded in a series of new models. Something that I felt I had to look into. First up is this model called Swordfish.
The first impression, both in picturea and in reality, is that it is a slightly larger and "meaner" version of the Penguin, especially the largest knife in that series with the addition "Plus". Incidentally, a knife I have reviewed before.
QSP Swordfish |
The reason it looks a little more aggressive is the shape of the blade. It's still a straight edge but there's a bit more of it while the blade is noticeably more pointed and the curved back of the blade makes this look more like a Wharncliffe than a Sheepsfoot if you put it that way.
For those looking for a straight edge with a distinct tip, Swordfish can be an option. Especially as you also get a button lock and a wire clip |
The length of the blade is 9.2 cm and the height is 2,8 which gives nice proportions so on that point QSP has succeeded. The thickness is kept to a well-chosen 3 mm and the steel used is Swedish 14C28N from Sandvik.
The handle is available in a few different materials and this particular one is a two-tone G10. It works on a utility knife, I thought. If a more sober or discreet color scheme is desired, brown or green Micarta is available. The shape of the grip is otherwise similar to that of the aforementioned Penguin but a little more shaped. As it is also longer, there is room for a small "beak" towards the end and the handle also swells a little at the height in the middle. Overall a good handle it seems.
The knife can then be opened in several different ways. In part, there are both a flipper and thumb studs, but then the knife blade can also be lured out by releasing the lock. Namely, there is a novelty on behalf of QSP. They have chosen to go for a "button" or "plunge" lock as it is also called.
The package is then rounded off with a really good wire clip. Not bad at all.
So if you were looking for a bigger, curvier but at the same time more cheeky version of the Penguin but with a button lock, the Swordfish is perhaps something for you. A review will follow as soon as I used the knife for a while.
