New Knife - Civivi Clingman

Sometimes you have to look back to move forward. This can apply to life as well as the design of folding knives. At least that's the case with this model. In this case, Civivi has collaborated with a YouTuber and outdoor enthusiast named Taylor Martin, the man behind Best Damned EDC.

The inspiration for this knife comes from Martin's upbringing and his father and grandparents. With that in mind, it's perhaps not surprising that the result was a "modern traditional"

The knife is named after a mountain peak in the Appalachians. One that has now regained its original name, by the way. But that's where the name Clingman came from.

"Modern Traditional" is a category that can hold quite a lot, and as for the Clingman, most parts of the appearance are rooted in tradition, the rest is very modern.

Good to know is that this is a small knife, smaller than you might be led to believe, even if you read the specifications. The total length when open is 178 mm. Of that length, the blade is 76 mm. This also makes it lightweight with its 78 g.

The handle is made of Micarta. I chose brown because I thought it most alluded to the older times this knife flirts with. The colour leans towards wood and will do so even more over time as the Micarta ages with dignity and gains patina.

The design with its distinctive clip point looks like a miniature Bowie blade and could have been on many a folding knife with a hundred years on its neck. But the steel is all the more modern as it is Nitro-V. To further strengthen the bands towards the back, the blade has a hollow grind, which means that the blade is thin behind the edge despite a thickness of 3 mm and a fairly low primary grind.

The other details are just as modern as the handle material and blade steel. Here you will find an extremely lightweight steel frame, ceramic ball bearings, and everything is rounded off with a rather exclusive milled titanium clip. To this should be added two opening methods, as there are both double-sided thumb studs and a discreet front flipper.

Overall, it gives a knife with many small features that will be interesting to explore. I will, of course, return with a review of Civivi Clingman
