New Knife - Condor TK Terrachete

Since I previously did not own a machete, this model from Condor Tool & Knife immediately became the largest knife in the collection. Then it can always be debated whether a machete is a knife or not. But it's an edged tool anyway. In addition, often a very effective one. Also, this particular model has some knife-like features, but more on that later.

The model is called Terrachete and thus goes very well with the Terrasaur bushcraft knife I reviewed earlier. Apart from the name, there are similarities between them in terms of handle material and steel. The designer behind both is Joe Flowers.

My first Machete

Many of Condor's knives are made of carbon steel and so is Terrachete, 1075 being the designation in this case. It's an excellent material for the purpose, as for a blade this long and with this area of use, you need something that can both withstand blows and that is springy. Therefore, a relatively soft hardening is also preferable. Machetes also don't need to be razor-sharp to cut well. Much of the power in the cut comes from the fact that the blade is relatively thin, 3 mm in this case.

The length of the Terrachete is just under 53 cm and of that the blade makes up 37 cm. The weight is 720 g. The handle is made of thermoplastic in the form of polypropylene. A simple but durable material that I hope removes some of the vibrations that occur when working with this type of knife. Personally, I have no experience with machetes, I must confess, but they are quite similar to a Swedish Bush Hook/Weed and Bark cutter knife and I have used such many times, so I suspect that the feel is similar.

Then this machete has a small finesse in that it has a slightly higher and sharper edge closer to the handle and the balance point for detail work, so it can also be used as a knife if needed. That impression is reinforced by the fact that it comes with a sturdy sheath made of the same material as the handle and is fitted with a leather loop to be worn on a belt. It remains to be seen whether I will use that finesse.

Overall an exciting and interesting acquaintance that I look forward to testing and reviewing!
