New Knife - SRM 401L

Light, well-balanced, sleek and elegant are the words that best describe my first impressions of this knife from Chinese SRM. The model named 401L GT deviates somewhat from their usual knives in that it most closely resembles a folding puukko. Especially as the handle is seemingly simple in shape with only a chamfered edge rounding it off. In addition, the entire knife is held together by only two screws,  the pivot screw included.

Of course, the Scandinavian grind also contributes to the impression.

The 401L is certainly not a giant, but not completely small either, as it is 191 mm long open. Of that, the blade makes up 83 mm. Then it should be pointed out that the blade is only 2.5 mm thick, which means that this knife cuts damn well, I can already reveal. I actually had time to use it a little before I wrote these lines. Incidentally, the steel is the 10Cr15 that SRM has started using on several of its models. Sometimes it has been called a Chinese VG10.

The knife is generally very thin and this means that the weight is as low as 68 g. That and the fact that the blade is almost completely hidden in the handle when the knife is closed makes it very easy to carry. Especially as the knife opens with a front flipper which is probably the world's smallest.

The opening is surprisingly fast despite that. Part of the explanation is found in the fairly weak resistance that the detent ball offers. In other words, it is not a knife for those who are allergic to that phenomenon. In fact, the knife can easily be gravity opened if you feel like it. It doesn't even take a particularly strong flick of the wrist.

But the overall impression is very positive. The knife is stylish and elegant and also very well balanced. You also get SRM's excellent "Ambi clip" in the package. The clip that can be removed without tools.

I look forward to carrying and testing this knife for the upcoming review!
