Sometimes you are pleasantly surprised. And I'm glad to still get that feeling from time to time. Especially regarding budget knives. In this case, it's a knife from a brand new to me, Sencut.
It is a sister brand to Civivi, which is interesting as it in turn was created as a "budget alternative" to WE-Knives. A bit like Lexus and Toyota once upon a time. Then Civivi's prices hiked a bit north and that's where Sencut comes into the picture. They are supposed to fill the gap that arose in the lower division.
And one thing is clear if they are going to do it with knives like Episode, the competitors have to watch out.
Sencut Episode |
As this is my first representative of the brand, the knife was scrutinized when it arrived. But there is not much that reveals that it is a "budget knife". Firstly, the Episode is very light for the size, cheaper knives otherwise tend to be heavier due to, among other things, clumsier frames. This in turn usually gives rise to balance problems. But not in this case. The balance is excellent and the frame is weight relieved. In addition, it is very nicely rounded. No sharp edges, something that is usually also revealing.
On top of that, the knife has excellent "action". There is a really good flipper on this model and the lock does its thing in a satisfying way. In addition, the blade is almost a "free dropper", ie the blade almost falls in by itself when the lock bar has released its grip. A light shake and the blade slides into place. Much of it is due to fine ball bearings.
What Sencut has saved on are really three things. One is a designer. In this case, it does not mean that there is anything wrong with the actual design of the knife, but that they save the well-known name among the knife makers for the Civivi and WE range. The second is material. Not because they are bad in this case. We are offered Micarta in the handle and 9Cr18MoV in the blade, which should not be confused with simpler Chinese steels.
The third and what probably matters most for the price is that all intermediaries have been skipped. Sencut knives can only be purchased through Amazon. No wholesalers, in other words. The disadvantage is, of course, that as a consumer you do not get any local retailers to go to where you can take a closer look at whatever you want to purchase before buying.
But that possibility isn't an option anyway, at least not where I live.
I will of course be back with a review of this very interesting model!
