New Knife - Camillus Tyrant

Sometimes you wonder about the state of things and sometimes the mind is occupied with more trivial stuff. Today, I'm the one wondering and what I'm wondering about is the name of this knife. Who thought "tyrant" was a good name? It is not something that feels immediately positive or radiates confidence. A tyrant really can't be trusted as you know.

Anyway, Tyrant is a small fixed blade from the reborn Camillus Brand, or Camillus as they used to be called. One of America's oldest knife brands which, after a stormy period fifteen years ago, lived a bit in obscurity, but is once again rising. At least it feels that way.

Unfortunately, this Camillus model comes in a blister pack intended for Wal Mart I suspect. That and the accompanying store alarm and the bullshit about "10x harder" do not inspire confidence

Fortunately, the knife feels significantly more solid than the packaging, this being the Camillus Tyrant

The new venture includes, among others, this knife which can be considered as a "backup" knife, a smaller fixed blade for EDC or maybe even a knife for the camping trip depending on the owner's preferences.

Tyrant is part of Camillus' "Titan" series, which mostly means that the blade is provided with a black coating of "Carbonitride Titanium". Otherwise, the blade is made of D2 and measures 7.5 cm in length. On the website, they have turned it a bit comically and claim that the knife is only 3" long and the blade 7.25". Apart from the small fad, they really need to revise their texts in general. The marketer who writes them doesn't seem to know much about knives. For example, they claim that the knife offers "D2 steel blade which offers good corrosion resistance /../" It is, of course, qualified drivel as D2 is not even stainless steel but tool steel. Possibly it can be argued that it is "semi-stainless" if that is a term but it is not among the better ones on that parameter, I might add.

The handle is made of G10 screwed in place on a full tang. The design is based on the very deep finger recess. Think knife models such as Fred Perrin Bowie or CRKT Minimalist and the like. One detail is that a lanyard has been incorporated into the handle so that it can be pulled out and fastened around the wrist if the wearer so wishes.

The knife comes with a leather sheath which also has a built-in small diamond sharpener that can be found at the belt loop. Overall a fairly interesting knife with some details worth discussing in more detail. That will of course happen as soon as I have time to use it and figure out what I think about the thing in question.
