Aim Games K21 Caverns of Mars has now officially closed!

That's it for now. The online competition  Aim Games K21 Caverns of Mars is officially over.

It resulted in 992 entries from 296 participants, who represented sixteen countries, including the USA, Indonesia, Scotland, Lithuania, Italy, Ukraine, Canada, and, of course, Sweden.

I have noted that the most participants definitely came from Indonesia, including the overall winner.

For a long time, I was in the top ten but somehow I was knocked out of there with a day or so left in the competition.

The wait towards the end of this competition was a bit nervous. I submitted three entries. The first was just to get on the results lists as the concept includes raffles of nice prizes as long as you have submitted an approved video. The points were extremely mediocre.

Entry number two was better and sent me to 31st place, something I was very happy with at the time. However, the downward trend began fairly immediately as more and more good results were noted, and I eventually found myself in fortieth place or so. At that point, the Swedish flag was held aloft by the eminent Astrid Sundlöf who was found in 7th place. For me, it felt like an unattainable position.

My best result was 20266 points which was enough for 11th place.

There are several reasons for that feeling, the absence of an indoor venue being one. In my case, it is the weather that largely determines how much can be thrown. Luckily, there was a gap with mild winter weather. Then I pulled out my best result, 20266p*, which brought me all the way up to sixth place at the time of submission. Considering the names participating in the competition and who I had behind me on the list, that was a dizzying feeling. 

But then I slowly started to slide down. For quite some time, I was in eighth place. It wasn't that easy to beat my points after all. Then a couple of big names slipped by and pushed me down to 10th place. There was no chance to try to defend my position by improving my own points. The targets were frozen solid. There was one name in particular I "feared" and that was Paul "Big Mac" Maccarone and sure enough, with two days left, he pushed me out of the top ten.

However, eleventh place is a position I am extremely happy with. After all, I have only practiced knife throwing for four seasons, even though I started in my teens. In addition, I lack the opportunity to practice as often as I want. I can't be indoors or close to my home, but have to travel for a while to get to my training ground.

I must take this opportunity to thank Rick "The Rocket" Lemberg for the chance to participate in this competition. It is completely free of charge, although there are prizes to be won. Very kind!

Now it's time to change my sights to no spin and the UKAT World Championships in the Czech Republic next summer. Although before that, there is actually another competition in this series called K22 Seven Seas. Something tells me I'll be participating in that one too.

Aim Games K21 avslutad!

Så var det över för den här gången. On-line tävlingen Aim Games K21 Caverns of Mars är officiellt avslutad. 

Det resulterade i 992 inskickade bidrag från 296 deltagare. De i sin tur representerade sexton länder, bland andra USA, Indonesien, Skottland, Litauen, Italien, Ukraina, Kanada och så Sverige förstås. 

Flest deltagare kom definitivt från Indonesien har jag noterat. Däribland den totale vinnaren. 

Länge låg jag top tio men något snöpligt förpassades jag därifrån med något dygn kvar av tävlingen

För min del blev det lite nervös väntan mot slutet av den här tävlingen. Jag skickade nämligen in tre bidrag. Det första var enbart för att hamna på resultatlistorna då det i konceptet ingår utlottningar av fina priser bara du är med på listan. Poängen var synnerligen mediokra. 

Bidrag nummer två var bättre och skickade in mig på en 31a plats, något jag var mycket nöjd med. Tämligen omgående började dock vandringen nedåt då allt fler bra resultat ramlade in varpå jag till slut befann mig på fyrtionde plats eller så. Vid det laget hölls den svenska fanan högst av den eminenta Astrid Sundlöf som återfanns på 7e plats. För mig en ouppnåelig placering kändes det som.

Det finns flera skäl som låg till grund för den känslan där frånvaron av inomhuslokal är en. I mitt fall är det vädret som till mångt och mycket styr hur mycket det kan kastas. Som tur var uppstod en lucka med milt vinterväder. Då drog jag till med mitt bästa resultat, 20266p* vilket förde mig ända upp till sjätteplats vid tiden för inskickandet. Med tanke på vilka namn som deltar i tävlingen och vilka jag då hade bakom mig i listan så kändes tanken svindlande. 

Men sedan började jag sakta glida nedåt. Länge låg jag på åttonde plats. Så jäkla lätt att slå mina poäng var det trots allt inte. Därefter smet ett par stora namn förbi och puttade ned mig till 10e plats. Någon chans att försöka försvara placeringen genom att förbättra mina egna poäng fanns inte. Tavlorna var genomfrusna. Det var särskilt ett namn jag "fruktade" och det var Paul "Big Mac" Maccarone och mycket riktigt, med två dagar kvar puttade han mig ur top tio.

Emellertid är elfte plats en placering jag dock är oerhört nöjd med. Jag har trots allt bara tränat knivkastning fyra säsonger även om jag började redan i tonåren. Därtill saknar jag möjlighet att träna så ofta jag vill. Jag har vare sig möjlighet att vara inomhus eller nära mitt hem utan måste resa en stund för att komma till min träningsbana. 

Jag måste passa på att tacka Rick "The Rocket" Lemberg för chansen att delta i den här tävlingen. Den är nämligen helt kostnadsfri trots det finns priser att vinna. Mycket gentilt! 

Nu är det dags att ställa om siktet mot no spin och VM kommande sommar. Fast innan dess kommer faktiskt ytterligare en tävling i den här serien kallad K22 Seven Seas. Någonting säger mig att jag kommer att delta även i den.

Aim Games K21 fortlöper...

Den sista tävlingen från Rick "The Rocket" Lemberg i form av Aim Games - K21 Caverns of Mars har visat sig vara en riktigt knepig utmaning. Vi är nu en bit in i tävlingen som varar till och med 16e december.   

Lätt är det inte med tanke på att ytorna är mindre än knivbladet är brett

Utmaningen är tämligen kvickt över när man väl försöker. Ett par minuter per omgång på sin höjd. Som minst kastar man nämligen bara fyra knivar och som mest tolv. Det sistnämnda har emellertid ingen i världen klarat av än. Det kanske säger något om svårigheten?

Så här ser poängberäkningstabellen ut

Anledningen är att en omgång är uppbyggd så att du första kastar på fyra "Air Locks". Luftslussarna är de fyra hörnen på den målade träffytan. De skall kastas i en specifik ordning med början längst upp till vänster följt av längst ned till höger, längst ned till vänster och avslutningsvis längst upp till höger. 

För varje träff som innebär en "edge cut", alltså att någon del av bladet är inne i zonen får du ett försök på de runda måltavlorna som symboliserar grottorna på Mars. Träffarna ger också poäng. Skulle du sätta alla fyra spelar det även roll om du lyckats med en eller flera "center cuts", träffar där ingen del av knivbladet bryter den yttre linjen. För varje sådan får du ett bonuskast. Som mest kan således åtta kast utöver de fyra grundkasten erhållas. 

Först efteråt insåg jag att jag fått fem extra kast men bara nyttjade fyra!

Problemet eller snarare en stor del av utmaningen är att de förbaskade fyrkanterna endast mäter 4x4 cm. Det är väsentligt mycket mindre än de tio centimeter en vanlig rund bullseye mäter. Särskilt komplicerat blir det eftersom det är mindre än vad de flesta kastknivar, inklusive mina, är breda. Därför räcker det med att mer än spetsen tränger in för att det inte skall bli en center cut även om träffen är perfekt. 

Sedan tillkommer komplikationerna att de skall träffas i ordning, att de inte sitter i samma höjd och att du måste upprepa träffsäkerheten.

Att det är svårt bevisas av att jag för närvarande vid plitandet av den här texten ligger på 31a plats i världen med mina 8000p. Poängskalan är för övrigt närmast exponentiell så den är ett kapitel för sig. Men du får alltmer poäng ju längre in i övningen du kommer. 

Av svenskar ligger jag just nu på fjärde plats. Något som känns bekant då jag framför mig har de två herrar som också slog mig i rotationskastning på årets SM. Sedan har vi den eminente Astrid Sundlöf som nu återfinns på sjunde plats totalt men som ett tag låg på fjärde plats. Det är grymt imponerande. Särskilt om man spanar in poängen där uppe i täten. 

De har dock alla en liten fördel över mig. De kastar inomhus vilket jag inte har möjlighet till. Av det skälet är jag beroende av väder och inte minst ljus. Men senare i veckan skall jag göra ett nytt försök att bättra på mina siffror. Det är i alla fall vad jag hoppas på. Mitt mående har nämligen inte varit helt på topp. Sådant påverkar förstås också.

Aim Games - K21 Caverns of Mars

Time for another challenge in the form of Aim Games' "K21 - The Caverns of Mars". Those of you who aren't into the knife-throwing might be wondering what the heck I'm talking about. Some who are may have the same thoughts.

But to make a long story short, a pandemic raged some time ago as everyone remembers. During it, of course, you could not hold competitions in various sports, including knife throwing. That got a household name and enthusiast named Rick "The Rocket" Lemberg thinking about how it could be solved, and he created a concept for online knife and ax competitions that he named Aim Games.

They were such a success that he is now at "K21" where the k stands for "Knife" and the number is of course how many competitions have passed. Then it can be mentioned that there were a number of ax competitions as well.

Unfortunately, I could not participate in the previous challenge due to the weather. This is despite the fact that the competitions last a full three months, during which the participants can submit videos of their efforts. They must be designed according to a specific set of regulations and reviewed, after which a point calculation takes place.

Unfortunately for me, the window was from January to March this year and the snow was deep here. The last time I participated was in "Aim Games K19 - The River". However, it had to be canceled due to external, extremely sad, and unfortunate circumstances.

New for this year is, among other things, that they will use advanced software delivered by the same company that makes programs for the FBI to search through films for manipulation in the form of, for example, editing or AI manipulation. Of course, nothing like that is allowed.

Such technology has never been relevant before. But new for this time is that there is prize money in the pot. We're talking a LOT of money too, around $43,000! That and the fact that I heard about someone who tried to cheat is probably the reason for that change.

Rick has always been kind and, for example, raffled off prizes donated by companies to all participants. But now a major sponsor has come in and suddenly there is money at stake in addition to knives and other things that can be won. How the sponsorship story came about is almost worth a text in itself. But it is quite spectacular.

Most notably, however, it's still FREE to join. Mr. Lemberg does this and puts in all the effort just because he wants to spread the sport and loves knife throwing. That's what I call a true enthusiast!

Now all that remained was to paint the fairly advanced target required to participate. Each sub-competition has its own target which illustrates a story. This time it's about exploring the planet Mars. Luckily I have my better half who is better at painting than I am. 

 The first thing to be hit is four "airlocks". It is the four areas in the corners that measure 4x4 cm. How you succeed in that moment determines how the rest of the throw proceeds by deciding how many throws you have for the rest of the round. This means a round has a minimum of four throws and a maximum of twelve. I don't think anyone will actually achieve the latter.

Now I will try to get some results myself. The first partial goal is just to get in with some points so you are in the raffles. Sub-goal two is, of course, to improve the result. But unlike everyone who has the opportunity to throw indoors, I am extremely dependent on the weather. Now it's pouring rain, for example, and then it must not be too dark, which is a problem this year when you work until four and can't possibly be on the throwing range before five thirty. By that time it's often dark.
