Bestechman, does that name sound familiar? No? For most people, it probably doesn't and that's quite natural as it's a new brand. Or rather a new old one or how to put it. It is simply the result of Bestech doing like so many others and trying to cover a larger part of the market by creating a sub-brand. Then maybe I don't think the name "Bestechman" is particularly well chosen, to be honest. But that is a highly personal opinion. It sounds contrived to my ears.
But more interesting is what they can conceivably accomplish in relation to the competitors. The trend of Chinese brands first establishing themselves and then expanding the number of brands has been going on for some time now.* Thus, it is not "terra incognita" that they are treading.
Bestechman Dundee |
For his first attempt, Bestechman used a fairly unusual but good approach. They have hired a well-known and established designer, which is not the norm in these contexts. Usually, it is in-house designers or anonymous teams who make the knives, whether they are successful or not.
But not here and it shows in the end result. The man responsible for this design is Polish Ostap Hel who, in addition to having made knives for the parent brand Bestech, also made knives for both Civivi and WE but also for Kansept Knives and Real Steel. An established gentleman by now, in other words.
Dundee as this model is called, is an attractive knife with sleek lines and a number of interesting details to study more closely. The goal behind the design is said to be "Simplicity, utility and materials suitable for budget friendly EDC tool."
This has resulted in a knife with a blade of 85 mm, which gives a total length of just over twenty centimeters. Quite a far cry from the movie knife from which the knife takes its inspiration. Well, it's everyone's crocodile-hunting Australian who got to name the creation. The only similarity I can think of is that some form of clip point is involved. But there all similarities end.
Right from the start, Bestechman seems to believe in the model as it was released in no more than nine different color schemes, some of which are exclusive to certain retailers. The material is G10 and in this version with sides in Micarta.** But here I firmly believe that the words "budget-friendly" in the objective received a little too much impact considering the final result. I will get back to why in a review, as there are both praise and criticism to hand out to Dundee. The first impressions are that Bestechman's premiere is not bad at all but that there are a few shortcomings to discuss.
* The reigning champions in the field are currently WE Knives which together with Civivi and Sencut are up to three different brands.
** The brown Micarta is specific to Knives and Tools.com where this knife comes from.
