Sencut named this knife the San Angelo and it has a couple of details that got me hooked. That is, besides having a sympathetic price tag. It is a knife that can be attributed to the "budget segment" although I don't like that expression as the perception of what it is differs between different individuals. But above all, it was the flowing lines and not least an interesting blade shape that I fell for.
A form that, incidentally, seems to be coming to life now. There is a long history in China that ends with what is called the "Shi lin Cutter" which is characterized by a large leaf-shaped blade.* There have been several knives released these days that squint in that direction which is interesting.** Also this Sencut blade leans in that direction but with a more modest appearance.
Although on further reflection it turned out that the blade is basically a copy of another knife I have. With the exception of a slightly slimmer "waist" near the handle, the blade is identical to the Viper Maremmano. A knife which in turn is a modern interpretation of a classic Italian model. The same ideas can arise in several places. In fact, the blade type is quite similar to a "Canadian belt knife" as well.
Sencut San Angelo |
The San Angelo is currently available in three different versions. This one with a black handle has handle sides in G10. If you don't like black, the knife can also be bought with natural/jade G10 instead. You know that tone that is almost translucent greenish-white. Option two is to choose a completely green handle and then the material is Micarta instead.
In which case you get a relatively large knife. The blade is just under nine centimeters (88 mm) long and the total length of the knife is around twenty centimeters. Despite that, the weight is low at 96 grams. That's not bad for a budget knife! The explanation is found in the fact that the model is slim and that Sencut has lightened the frame properly. Then the G10 sides are not excessively thick and the same can be said about the blade which has a stock thickness of 3 mm.
The knife comes with a nylon pouch |
Common to all versions and for that matter most if not all Sencut models are that the steel is Chinese 9Cr18MoV. In this case, it runs on fine ceramic ball bearings. The same material is found in the detent ball. The lock is a liner lock and the package is rounded off with a fairly standardized deep ride clip in steel. If you open the blade, you do it with a flipper tab.
Overall, this knife gives a very likable impression from when I unboxed it and even after I've carried it for a couple of days. Now it just needs to be used more so I can review it later on.

* A known interpretation of such a model comes from Spyderco and is called the Spyderco Lum.
** One such example is the Fox Shinlin designed by Voxnaes.
