Slightly larger, slightly sturdier, and otherwise with distinct family ties is a way to describe 258L from SRM Knives related to the SRM 255 I previously reviewed here. When I introduced that knife, I called it a step on the evolutionary ladder.
In that context, this feels like another natural continuation. A knife for those who like the 255 but simply want a little more.
SRM 258L |
The similarities are found in several areas. The blade shape is the most obvious as they are almost identical. Not quite but close. In this case, this means a drop point that measures 90 mm in length with a stock thickness of 3.2 mm. The steel used is D2. I can't consider that as an upgrade compared to the previous 10Cr steel, but maybe it is in line with the knife being a little "tougher". I have reason to return to it.
Furthermore, the knives of course share the SRM unique "Ambi Clip" system, which is a clip that can be removed or changed without tools. In addition, both knives have the same lock construction called Ambi-Lock. It in turn is one of many Axis derivatives but what is unique to SRM is what they call the "Mono Chassis". They forgo a full frame in favor of a box that houses the lock. It provides a stiffer handle and lock without increasing the weight.
But on this particular knife, SRM has chosen to make everything a little thicker and stronger than its little brother, which means that the 258L actually has a full steel frame. This knife is also not open in the back, which gives more contact surface for the hand and thus the knife is more suitable for heavier tasks. That combined with a handle that measures 110mm in length and is 13mm thick makes this an excellent all-round knife.
Especially as the action is just as excellent as in the predecessor. Overall, this knife makes a very likable first impression. I will of course come back with a review.
