New from Karesuandokniven!

Despite the name, there is actually no knife that is relevant this time. The Swedish company Karesuandokniven, which is one of the most northenmost knife makers in the world, has a wide range of products for outdoor life which in addition to knives also includes knife sets, kåsor/kuuksa (traditional cups), fire steels and not least axes! All deeply rooted in Scandinavian tradition.

These axes called Metsämies (Finnish for woodsman or hunter) are new in the range for 2022 and fall under the Karesuando knife's department for forest axes. That is, small flexible tools that are easy to carry with you when you are out camping, hunting or go on fishing trips, kayaking and other outdoor activities. Even if they have a specific ax range for hunting even more specialized for that task.

New for this year is also that the axes are available in sets with matching fire steel and a double sided diamond sharpener and a belt sheath in leather to carry the set in. An extra nice touch is that the handle of the fire steel is made out reindeer antler with the matching company logo on.

The set includes an ax, fire steel and a double sided diamon sharpener as well as a sheath

This ax or rather hatchett is available in two sizes. The larger one has been given the name XL, but that must be viewed in relation to the category of belt axes and this smaller Metsämies Hätä which is only 23 cm long with a total weight of 350 grams. Certainly the measurements give some limitations in terms of chopping capacity, but in return the ax is very easy to carry with you, which is the point.

It is also made even easier by the handy sheath with belt loop. There are also separate holsters for the diamond sharpener and the fire steel included in the set. If you only want an ax, it can of course be bought separately.

The ax head is made of stainless steel with a black coating and the handle is hand-cut from a piece of red beech and the end button is made of moose horn.

I must say that I am really looking forward to testing this ax both in the woods and here at home. Close at hand is trimming a couple of solid pieces of birch that will act as knife throwing targets. Let's see how this little tool perform because it sure looks good!
