New Knife - Spyderco Grasshopper Black

Now it has turned black! The little grasshopper from Spyderco. It is not the main selling point even though that color or rather the lack of color attracts some. But that was not what I fell for. In fact, I already have a Grasshopper. I knife I like in terms of format, as a keychain knife, but not in terms of quality. Nothing wrong with the construction itself but there is a "but".

The steel in the blade is not very good, which has resulted both in the knife dulling if you look at it harshly and a bent tip. I do not remember exactly what kind of material they put in it but I have in mind that it is either cheese or Chinese 3Cr13. As close to kitchen sink material as you can get in other words. The only thing that speaks in its favor is that it is quite resistant to corrosion.

But now Spyderco has upgraded the steel in this larger of the mini models.

Spyderco C138BK Grasshopper Black

The word "bigger" is of course relative and should be placed in its context which means a series of micro-knives Spyderco released in the form of the model's Bug, Honey Bee, and Grasshopper. They have also been able to be bought in three-packs from time to time and that was what I did when they arrived. They are said to be quite useful according to Spyderco's website where it says
"Spyderco’s micro-sized slipjoints are fully functional, impressively sharp folding knives that are very much at home on a keychain."

I do not really agree. The two smaller ones are in my opinion more gimmicks. Especially Bug that is more of a pendant that you can possibly cut a sewing thread with. But that does not apply to big brother Grasshopper, who after all has a blade of almost six centimeters, even though it is very slim. However, the weight is still a modest 34 grams.

But back to what has changed and that is steel! Now you get a capable 12C27 from Sandvik in this little rascal. Good steel for the price range, which also transforms this model from a filling in someone's Spyderco collection to a sympathetic modern small slip joint. Ready to be part of any EDC rotation.

A review of this knife will follow!
