New Knives - Pierre Cazoulat Woodpecker

There are throwing knives and then there are THROWING knives. These definitely belong to the latter category. They show a completely different level of quality than most I have held in the past, regardless of the price range. But we are talking about handmade custom knives.

These knives called Woodpecker are the latest model of knives intended for rotational throwing from French Pierre Cazoulat. Pierre is a gentleman who has been involved in knife throwing for many years with a huge track record that includes championship titles from both France and the USA.*

Woodpecker is a fairly large model without being gigantic. The latter category is dominated by different variants of American "mountain bowies". Woodpecker also leans toward the classic look but is somewhat more restrained in terms of the format. Otherwise, Cazoulat has even larger knives in his repertoire such as the Sphinx and Kalao, both of which weigh in over a pound in the 6 mm versions.

They are all the kind of throwing knives I prefer from a purely aesthetic perspective, the ones that still look like knives. With both "edges", false edges, and handles, these definitely do. Then Woodpecker boasts rather bold lines with its angled handle and the prominent harpoon tip.

The material is stainless steel, I don't know much more about it at the moment. Woodpecker has a thickness of 6 mm. The length of the knives is 33.5 cm and it is matched with a width of 4 cm at most. The dimensions mean that they are approved for all types of competition regulations **. The size gives a fairly noticeable knife that weighs in at around 460 g or around a pound, which makes them the heaviest I own. The center of gravity is found around one and a half inches in front of the handle, which is angled in an interesting way. It allows you to shift rotational speed by turning the knives upside down for example. It remains to be seen how it works in practice.

The knives come with something as rare as a very nicely done convex grind to something that almost resembles a live edge. But the last millimeter of the edge is not sharpened and that allows you to comfortably grip the knives by the blade. This applies to both the main edge and the double-edged tip. The edges of the rest of the knife are just broken so as not to feel sharp and the finish is delicious. The handles are made out of thick pieces of leather fastened with three sturdy rivets. It is one of the few handle materials that actually withstand the stresses a throwing knife is exposed to.

The "wow factor" is very high in these knives and they gave a really good first impression. It will be even more exciting to try them out properly. If they are half as good as I believe, these are the knives I will use on the classic moments in next year's Swedish championship!

Except for some silly American system that has rules completely different from all other organizations.
